The Golden Agers - Community Project by Captain's Cut
Nov 18, 2024
Keith Caruana
The thought of giving back to our elderly who fought wars and adversity for our current liberties and prosperous times, has always been lingering at the back of my mind for a few months. The question was 'HOW' and as fashion designer and craftsman, I couldn't think of any other idea except from the obvious, share my passion for leathercraft and get them to try out the craft and engage with them in an interactive exchange on the history of leathercraft. It was a mutual exchange of knowledge, a good laugh occasionally and a lot of questions on leather-care and techniques.
We visited two day care centres one in Mgarr and one in Dingli. During these visits we were warmly greeted by senior citizens coming from all walks of lives. With so many talented crafts people some of which worked in the manufacturing industries in the seventies and eighties, design and sewing discussions could simply go on for days.
I just want to thank the ministry for Senior Citizens and Active Ageing for helping me out in coordinating these workshops. Their dedicated staff and managers are simply amazing. Captain's cut donated all materials and a few small leather gifts which the participants crafted and eventually were left as the winning gifts for the next round of bingo.
I would also like to cordially thank the Malta Crafts Foundation for their trust and for the Endangered Crafts Award as this community project was initially formally proposed as part of my nomination for the said award.
Surely this project is just the beginning and we at Captain's cut believe that tradition and deep rooted sense of community is the core of everything we do. Project Golden Agers is born.
