Malta Fashion Week 2024 - Oscuro

As we live through these Dark Global times, the flow of Dark Red leather symbolizes the blood lost in regional and global conflicts. Black leather is a sober reminder of the classics and camouflage with the smoke rising from our cities and souls as we try to make sense of everything around us, including death.Crocodile print on cowhide shows the primordial strength, structure and resilience of a silent, elegant, yet fatal power of nature. Prepare to be captivated by applying these textures on functional leather accessories handcrafted by the Captain in his workshop in Valletta. In this exclusive event, our spotlight shines on the timeless elegance of custom belts crafted along the human contours. The sophistication of timeless bags with an innovative artisanal twist in full grain leather and custom handles forged in Malta turns carrying belongings into art.

Join us as we delve into the world of creative collaboration and the supportive team behind the scenes that brought this vision to life. Captain's Cut is not just about fashion; it's a story of dedication, artistry, and the pursuit of a meaningful expression in the world of design.

My first debut as a designer at the Malta Fashion week was lifechanging ; both in terms of concept, execution and personal effort. I cannot not mention the personal and professional help by Adrian Mizzi, a maverick and pretty much the face behind Maltese fashion and its evolutionary process that changed the local cultural lanscape throughout the past 25 years. Under the humble and altruistic guidance of one of Malta's best fashion designer and paper master craftsman, James Dimech the first meeting with all leading local and international designers , the dream to take Captain's Cut to the next level started.

After a complex cloud of thousands of ideas and concepts. I soon started spending sleepless nights running to the studio to draw designs most of which binned by next morning but the general direction became much more clear- I wanted to create a collection based on the utility, durability and sustainability of leather but more importantly it had to be a genuine expression of a craftsman against all fast fashion and most of the times fake claims of 'real leather', 'genuine leather' by leading industry giants. But this could only happen in my head by hand cutting, hand stitching and at times even dying all the leather pieces I use. I wanted to create a collection that is 101% handmade from hide to the runway.

It was an extremely expensive dream both in terms of material and more importantly time. Looking back, I have no regrets. I cannot not mention the immense support I had from my brother David who although comes from the medical field truly helped me in the crafting and at times in the mechanics of it all. Lets be honest artists are never organized, realistic and I do admit, I am a bit of a drama maestro when the clock starts ticking.

Michelle Galea by hair styling lead also helped me immensely throughout this 6 month ordeal and her originality and long years in the industry truly helped me ease into a creative yet functional collection.

Credits cannot miss the great make up team lead by Giliane Agius and the photography team lead by Kurt Parnis and the videography gurus by motion blur.
